A Dialogue Between East and West: When Dalton Plan Meets the Self-Organization Theory

You did a good job!”

On 5 November 2019, Wenzhou Dalton Elementary School hosted the forum “Where East Meets West: Self-Organization Theory United with Dalton Philosophy”. The forum was attended by delegates from Dalton International—President Roel Rohner, and his advisors Paul Bruijn and Agata Soẃinska. A constructive dialogue was held to explore the Dalton education of the new age in China.

This year marks the anniversary of two historic events in education—-100 years of Dalton Plan and Self-organization theory which Ms Bai Lili established 10 years ago. Therefore, as Ms. Bai put it, this forum has two-fold significance: it celebrates Dalton Plan, embracing all the traditions, concepts, and philosophies Dalton Plan has promoted; and it seeks to integrate both important educational theories as foundation upon which a seamless cooperation between Dalton international and Dalton Elementary School will be achieved.

Visitors from Dalton International witnessed the examples of the beautiful integration of Dalton plan and Ms. Bai’s self-organization theory during their tour in school. Students’ works of diverse topics exhibit their individuality and creativity. Child-centred philosophy is well implemented through every details from the classroom setting to activity design. Moreover, the school’s study lab programs, which was designed to cultivate learners’ organization and self-directed learning skills, was greatly applauded by the visitors. “You did a good job!” was frequently heard from Mr Rohner and his colleagues while they were touring the school.

In addition, our visitors were deeply impressed by the little tour guides who showed them around in school the whole time. These little tour guides were a part of one of the school’s programs launched by the English Department at the beginning of this semester in order to give visitors from abroad a thorough introduction to the school as well as put “learning by experience” into practice. Acting as a professional, the little guides performed their duty exceptionally. They introduced their beloved school with pride while answering all the visitor’s questions. They shared the spots they love most with the visitors, among which the school counselor’s office, Dalton Town, and STEAM Club were on the top of the list.

Mr. Rohner was amazed at how children explained one of their science projects—the record of the life cycle of a butterfly: “This insect has experienced three deaths before it transforms into a butterfly” He appreciates that the school provides a platform for children’s growth intellectually, physically and emotionally. “ In here the children’s energy has been unleashed, therefore their creativity inspired.” he said.

Looking at those incredible children and their works, Mr. Rohner and his team were aware that behind those children there are dedicated teaching staff who firmly believe in “child-centered” philosophy and put it into daily practice, who go above and beyond for the growth of every child. “You should be proud of these children! You should be proud of your teachers!” Mr. Rohner said to Ms. Bai.

Dalton International will provide training to teaching staff in Dalton Elementary school, equipping them with progressive Dalton education concepts and international vision. Teachers who have received training and proved qualified after observation class and evaluation will be granted Dalton Certificate from Dalton International. “We have been firmly implementing Dalton Philosophy “Child-Centered” in our school as Mr. Rohner observed” Ms Bai Lili said “ I believe this forum as well as the training Dalton International provides will no doubt bring our school to a new level.”
